Interesting plot. Kept my interest until the end.

Hi my name is Nikki and I’m addicted to CoHo.

What can I say? I binged another Colleen Hoover book in a day

slammed

Slammed is how my heart feels right now. Like it has even slammed into my chest trying to explode.

Will made me fall in love with him. To take on the responsibility that he did and to try to put other first before his heart. Lake and Julia’s back and forth relationship made me cry once they got onto the same page. Kel and Caulder made my heart squeeze: they were just adorable leaning on each other and bringing the best out of each other. Gavin and his pre proposal. Swooon. I wish I could have a moment like that in my life. Eddie was the upbeat light that this book needed, that lake needed. I just love how all of these characters leaned on each other and were there for each other. Except Javier.. he can go kick rocks.

DNF. I normally love Colleen Hoover but my god this book is SO cringey and ridiculous. I felt like I was reading a CW tv show. Ack. Idk how it has such raving reviews. Maybe I would’ve liked it in sixth grade. Idk. Bleh.

As much as I love CoHo I will never love a book where it’s a kid and a teacher relationship. Nope nope nope

I'd heard a lot of great things about Colleen Hoover's Slammed. And... I'd heard a lot of terrible things about it, as well. So when I had the opportunity to read a review copy through NetGalley, I wanted to see for myself what all the fuss was about. I didn't expect to have such a meh reaction to it, however.

Layken's single mother has moved her and her brother from Texas to Ypsilanti, Michigan for a job. The first day she's there, she meets neighbor Will Cooper: handsome, mysterious, and really into slam poetry. They have an instant attraction that's quickly derailed when they discover something that will keep them apart: the big secret of the book.

Slammed had a ton of potential, and its emotional resonance is definitely there at points, which is probably what led to its popularity. Still, it's an uneven roller coaster for a reader, with moments of poignant emotion and then moments of roll-your-eyes unbelievability that draw you right out of the story. The very idea that Layken and Will could have forged enough of a connection during their short time together to have sustained them through the rest of the book's drama was one of the biggest eye-rolls of them all: the insta-love trope is one of my least favorites and yet it's rolled out here with a red carpet entrance and VIP seating.

Still, as I said, there are glimmers of what might have been a brilliant novel, which is frustrated time and again by such things as the pat ending, the too-convenient set-up once you see the pieces fall into place, and the over-the-top climactic moments, all of which overshadow subtle, quieter moments, which, left on their own, might have been enough to make this a really good, if not great read. As it stands, I was left with no impulse to read the book's sequel, which picks up a few months after Slammed's epilogue; I know all I need to know about these characters and based on the short excerpt placed at the end of this book, the manufactured drama of the second book will be more than I can tolerate or believe.

I’m having a difficult time thinking of anything I liked about this book. Someone explain to me why this author is so popular.

If you like a good ol’ Angsty Teenage Love Story, then this is the book for you! I only wish the heroine was a little more mature at times - buuuut I guess she’s 18, so what can you expect?

Another CoHo BANGER
Deeper context and more believable characters than some of the other books I’ve read from her…
Absolutely loved the MC and the Male MC. Teenage love is something that people forget can last forever.
It’s powerful and can withstand the tests of time; the story is realistic and although it had me in tears sometimes, I also laughed out loud. What more can you ask from an author?
