DNF'ing after 141 pages. This is my 3rd Maugham, and I have hated everything I have previously read by him. In my defense, I read him at least 6-8 years ago, and so thought with *age* and *maturity* I might get on with him at this point in my life. However, there is no getting around it: Maugham is insufferable. If I read one more line about his fat phobia and sexism . . . The narrator and Elliott are the most egregious characters, but, truly, each one is unbearable. I can't even believe I made it half-way.
Its so fun getting into literature after spending years grappling with film culture, I have virtually no direct reference for the various scenes and movements, so it clicks something different when I begin to see those take shape
my favorite review of this book just says, “outdated.” well yes!
I struggled with what to rate this one because I never felt motivated to pick it up, but I did enjoy it while I was actually reading it. anyways shoutout to my man Larry. he was a real one.
