This book deals with the ideas of racism, identity, secrets, desire, and social opinion in a multi-layered story beginning with the life of a professor whose reputation was destroyed by a supposedly racist comment. The reader subsequently meets and hears the stories of a Vietnam War veteran, a displaced female French professor, and an illiterate(?) working woman, and others. The stories of the characters in The Human Stain could stand on their own, but together, weave a story about an America, albeit a depressing one, that we recognize.
It's always good to read an acknowledged great book by one of America's acknowledged great writers and understand what makes both the book and the writer so great. Totally engrossing, brilliantly written, amazingly thought-provoking.
This book succeeds because Roth is a genius. He never says "This is Coleman's experience." Instead he says, "Given what I've heard, this is how I see Coleman's experience."
Funny, tender, biting, gentle, this book peers into the minds of so many disparate characters and only a genius like Philip Roth could take this cast and make it a cohesive whole that tells each of us a story about ourselves.
Every time I read this, I am again overwhelmed. The audiobook was terrific, even though, as I always do, I found myself repeating phrases aloud from time to time with just slightly different inflection. Still, a terrific reader.
