No.

"No one should feel bad for trying to be good."

Mateo deserved every good thing in the world because he believed there is a good part in everyone deep inside. He'll give everyone the benefit of the doubt. He's pure, innocent, and kind that I would willingly save him in the face of danger, and he'll do the same. He lived for everyone. My love for this character will be endless.

If anyone would ask if this made me cry, the answer is no. But it felt like my heart squeezed with every passing chapter because of how attached I felt to Mateo. The fact that deep inside, I was rooting for Mateo to beat Death-Cast. Deep inside, I wished death for him was not inevitable. With my all, I wish he's real and knowing that a person like him is living would be comforting.

Mateo is 97% reason I'm giving this five stars, 1% because of how great that everything and EVERYONE are connected (in some way) and have their own POVs, and 2% because Rufus helped Mateo be everything he wanted to be in his last hours and Mateo, helped Rufus found colour in his life in his last hours.

CW: Violence, Blood, Death of Animal (Bird), House on Fire, Car Accident, Bomb Explosion, Suicide Ideation, Gun, Anxiety, Attempted Murder, Bullying, Death, Depression, and Grief (search it up for more specifics or correct CW as mine is what I thought is triggering while I read it)

They Both Die at the End is a masterclass in world building and detail work, and the format really, really works. definitely not a lighthearted book by any means (shocking, i know, for a book with this title), but there’s a lot of joy and life packed into these pages.

I wanted a sad book that would break and shatter my heart. Safe to say I found it. This is a wonderful book and I honestly don’t know if knowing that they both die at the end makes it better or worse. It was very nice to get to know Mateo and Rufus.

After 2n read
I don't remember crying this much when I read it for the first time. Maybe it's so much sadder now because I have already lost Mateo and Rufus once before and because I know what's going to happen. Whatever the reason: I cried a lot. A lot lot. So much. It hurt more than the first time around.
all for a cup of tea, honestly.
