This is the graphic novel adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's novel The Road. It is beautifully done with minimal dialog and dense illustrations. Manu Larcenet captures the bleakness of this post-apocalyptic world where the few remaining people are trying to survive in an unsurvivable environment. The story is fantastic, but it's worth the time to get lost in these evocative and stunning graphical renditions.

"When he woke in the woods in the dark and the cold of the night he'd reach out to touch the child sleeping behind him. Nights dark beyond darkness and the days more gray each one than what had gone before. Like the onset of some cold glaucoma dimming away the world."
I could not imagine a better artist more suited to adapting McCarthy's poignantly haunting use of words to recreate the bleak and visceral post-apocalyptic dystopian America. Every panel in every page aptly captures the decaying expanse of the cold world around them as an ash-spoiled winter creeps in, while also richly highlighting the warmth and love between father and son as they "carry the fire" and forge on. It's exactly as McCarthy wrote the story to be. As one of my all time favorite books, I knew as soon as I saw the cover I would be pleased with this graphic novel adaptation. This has blown past all of my expectations even then.

I think this just wasn't for me, and/or it was hard to decipher in digital format on my phone. I know the book has large dimensions and I'm sure bigger pages will make what's going on much easier to decipher. I unfortunately found a lot of it to be hard to tell what was going on due to the sketchy nature of the art, and how small my phone screen is; even if I zoomed in it didn't keep the quality so it made things really blurry. I also haven't read this book yet, and I feel like I would understand more what's going on if I had. Some things happen then a page or two later it's just moved on to the next thing, and I understand there hardly being any dialogue but what dialogue there was was repetitive. I think if I came back to this in physical form after reading the book I'd have a better appreciation for it. As such, I know my review is pretty subjective so I won't give it as low of a rating as I normally would based on how I'm feeling after reading it.
