Successfully keeps the tension of the book, which is extremely hard to do.

McCarthy is complicated author because of the ways in which he chooses to write his epics. I wanted to test my mind with his writing via “The Road,” a less than extravagant but albeit intriguing plot that would scratch my itch for ambiguous and morally questionable narratives. And yet, I kept hearing the same, grumbling complaints of McCarthy’s style being too monotone, too many runny paragraphs, too slow in its unraveling. And I for one have had enough of those kinds of styles often found in older classics like “Of Mice and Men.” So, I took “The Road” off my tbr, accepting I’ll never touch anything by McCarthy….
Until I came across, by chance and perhaps by literary intervention, this graphic novel adaptation! I immediately checked it out and squeezed it into my soon-to-read pile.
I’m sure the star speaks for itself. I absolutely am sickened by this novel in the best way possible. The art style perfectly illustrates the dark and gritty world remaining and the predator vs prey mentality the man and the boy continuously fear.
Nothing is uncensored. If things such as decomposing, mutilated, burnt,
and malnourished bodies as young as a newborn disturbs you, then don’t read this adaptation. However, I would argue that besides his film adaptions, this is the best way to experience McCarthy if his writing is too intimidating.
If you don’t know the ending, it’s a whirlwind. Open and uncertain as a window during a winter storm. I have my own interpretations; applause to McCarty for his reflections of faith and humanity, they’ll be something I think about for a long time.
