A small team of intrepid mice goes to rescue a Norwegian poet from the remote and perilous Black Castle, home of a huge and vicious cat.
This is not at all the plot of the movie, having its own serendipitous charms despite the sexism. The illustrations are whimsical, and even in the limited Kindle version, quite the enhancement.

Very charming. I loved Miss Bianca--she's very traditionally feminine but both uses her own personality and skills and develops new ones to become a heroine. The light humor and adventure, as well as the camaraderie between the three mice, are a lot of fun.
Spoiler
The ending, in which Miss Bianca and Bernard part, is surprisingly bittersweet.
This was our most recent family read aloud. My older girls at 6 and 8 quite enjoyed the adventures of Bernard, Miss Bianca and Nils the Norwegian mouse. I appreciated the larger vocabulary than you often find in books aimed at the elementary set and it was a sweet story with just the right amount of tension but without any bad guys or real scary bits. My 3 1/2 year old did pick up the word dungeon from this book. We have requested the next in the series from our local library.
I grew up with the Animated Movies of the Rescuers, I'm not sure which of the books the first movie or the second belonged to, But the movies certainly didn't shine a light on Miss Bianca's growth as a character from what I remember. It was nice to see her grow throughout the story to see her task completed in all ways. Definitely looking forward to the rest of the series!

In reading Margery Sharp's The Rescuers, I found myself comparing Miss Bianca of the book to Eva Gabor's Miss Bianca in the Disney cartoon. And at first I was leaning towards Disney, but by the end of the book, I found Sharp's Bianca a much more dynamic character, and though I read the book throughout with Miss Gabor's accent, I found I greatly preferred the characters of the book moreso than the cartoon. However, I didn't enjoy the ending, but really when you're characters are mice there is only so much they can do.
This has so far been our favorite read aloud. I grew up watching the movies that I thought were based on this book but this is a different story altogether.
While this is a children’s book it really has something for everyone. There were jokes included that kids won’t understand but also are not inappropriate for children to hear.
I’m honestly not sure what else to say that wouldn’t spoil this for others.

I don't think I read this exact edition. It was the novelization of the film (as apposed to the original text). I'd read it several times as a child, before I ever saw the Disney movie. I loved it! I even caught a dragonfly in my father's garden, and named him Evanrude! He lived in a jar beside my bed, and was buried in the garden where I found him. I think I was maybe five years old.
