reading Cleo’s POV as a twenty-something with a habit of dating older people felt like walking barefoot on Legos—uncomfortably relatable and occasionally unbearable. Their relationship teeters between captivating and cringe-worthy, with the power imbalances hitting way too close to home. Please don’t get me started on the constant POV shifts. it’s like the book couldn’t decide who it wanted me to emotionally spiral with. While the chaos was intentional, it sometimes made staying invested feel like a chore. Great writing, but I could’ve used a breather (and maybe therapy) in between chapters

The most redeeming characters have the least time to develop and reflect. Everyone in this book needs help.

Every single character that was introduced was interesting and unique, something I believe to be integral to a good book. Cleo and Frank were both, in their own weird ways, characters worth rooting for, even when they did make it hard. I also appreciated that the author made both of them make decisions that were unforgiveable, horrible, irredeemable, and yet redeemed them. I often find that authors try to redeem characters that haven't yet become bad, but Cleo and Frank definitely made some huge mistakes. The Jesus incident did make it very hard for me to root for Frank after that point, but I'm also a little bit too much of an animal lover to really expect otherwise. Overall, I just really appreciated the author's willingness to go there, something not all authors are willing to do.

Probably one of the hottest it-books of the last two years, I wasn’t sure what to expect with this one, but it did feel very vibe-y, which was accurate. Taking place in Manhattan and featuring characters of a certain milieu (flashy; social) “Cleopatra and Frankenstein,” about the rise and fall of a couple who surprisingly get married, alongside the lives of their friend groups and relatives, had moments of depth, was a juicy read at times, detailed and committed to its alternating POVs, and at times very graphic in its sexual imagery and violence. (I want to note that I really appreciated how she wrote the characters of color too). Its author Coco Mellors cared a lot about her characters and it showed in her writing. And as someone who lived in NY in the 2010s, this book also heavily harkened to that time period for me and thus, a ride of bittersweet nostalgia.
