This book was GREAT! I loved the language and that I got to meet multiple pov, I really like that I got to hate
Frank
in the beginning and in the end I started to really like that character. And the opposite with
Quentin
. So excited for my book club’s discussion on the future. If you want to read this book, go read it now! It’s amazing!

I could tell after the first chapter that this was going to be an all time favourite book of mine. So beautiful and heartbreaking and human. I fell in love with every character despite their flaws and how they’d anger me at certain points but I wanted the best for each and every one of them.

The fact that this story took 7 years to flesh out completely is evident by the amount of care taken in the way this story of told, so beautifully written. I can tell I’m going to be revisiting this book for years to come.

I read it super quickly and the themes definitely touched my core wounds but I didn’t fall in love with any of the characters. I didn’t feel what they were feeling.

there’s an exposition-dump issue that made some parts feel like i was reading an outline of the novel rather than the thing itself. past perfect backstory once or twice or ten times is fine but if its every other page … yikes.

absolutely HATED eleanor and her holier than thou whining, she brings nothing to the table — ok i get it Narratively she is the tether to reality as opposed to the rest of the characters’ extravagant NYC brouhaha, but it falls flat bc she’s genuinely so bland and annoying. it feels like she’s taking up space. im supposed to take coco’s word for it that’s shes so unassumingly great and perfect that frank and cleo love her so much? this mousy white woman is “sensational”? (and yes cleo is also White Woman, but she has some character and that whole manic pixie dream girl thing going for her. eleanor and Human Garbage does not.)

all the characters are insufferable but not in a subversive on-purpose way but rather as if the author actually thinks theyre a lovable cast of misfits. only zoe and santiago are.

overall enjoyable i guess! the way a car wreck is. but for a book that took 7 years to write i expected better. it had the bones for it. plus the ending was ass - in what world would the cleo that had developed for the last 350 pages just be all peace and love about eleanor? cowards way out of following through with a character and a narrative thread just to tie up loose ends and be done with the whole thing. point is i finally understand what show don't tell means because this novel kept me telling me shit i was supposed to believe without showing me why. n
