mysterious medium-paced

I think this book seals it for me - I’m not a fan of whodunnits.

This book in particular is immensely frustrating. It is too long, and not simply because it is 2 or 3 stories wrapped together as one. The first section read as if the author disliked his audience (from stupid names to the interactions of characters to the details provided and withheld from the reader) and then in the second part it is made explicit that this was indeed the author’s intention. Kudos to the writer for being able to build that in - not worth suffering through for 170 pages.

Then, after following all the intentional obfuscations which make the multiple reveals plausible, and rolling through an obscene amount of rhetorical questions, and all the clichés the genre has to offer, THE MAIN CHARACTER IS SAVED BY A DEUS EX MACHINA. All the swear words.

In the end, I think the book is written as a whodunnit but comes off as a poorly executed magic trick. GOB Bluth would be proud. But if you’re into whodunnits and the publishing industry, then you might enjoy this.

I loved the idea of a book within a book and that's what peaked my interest. That part actually worked pretty well. I enjoyed the inner book more than the outer story which just seemed to drag on.
challenging mysterious medium-paced

This book was super clever in both its style and the mysteries involved. I actually solved the murder of Alan pretty quickly but it didn't stop me from devouring the book. The book within a book style was super engaging.

I did a re-read/listen to this so I could read the next Susan Ryeland book! I remembered that Charles had killed Alan because he was going to make a mockery out of the series by revealing his anagram (Atticus Pund = A Stupid C**t). But I couldn't remember how Magpie Murders ended. I did remember, as I was getting close to the end that Mary Blakeston's death was an accident but had forgotten that Robert had killed his brother all those years ago and Sir Magnus now.

All in all it held up. I love Horowitz's meta-fiction and can't wait to read Moonflower Murders and the most recent Hawthorne & Horowitz books!

3.5 stars

the ending of the fictional book felt too dragged out.
