I grew to hate it as it drew near the end. The first story was enjoyable, the second far less, and the resolution to the first was extremely unsatisfying, to the point that like season 7 of Game of Thrones, I'm denying it's existence.
The main character of the second story is an editor of mystery novels, but this novel badly needed an editor. Large parts later on were totally unnecessary, and the conclusions of the detective from the first story were unsupported by evidence in my opinion. "Why else would ___?" is really not all that persuasive. Skip it.

I gotta hand it to the author. A mystery novel set INSIDE another mystery novel?? That takes craft. I'm impressed that he was able to pull everything together so seamlessly at the end. I'm more of a Watson than a Sherlock (read: dummy), so I obviously didn't stand a chance at actually solving either murder, but I still really enjoyed the intricacies of the plot and generally just going along for the ride.
I have to admit though, I think I enjoyed the Atticus Pünd "Magpie Murders" more than the Susan Ryeland "Magpie Murders." I was getting so invested in the characters and the Golden Age British mystery vibes, only to have it cruelly ripped away in the final hour to pivot to Susan's story! Perhaps I was just salty from being left on a cliffhanger, but I couldn't get as into Susan's part of the story. I felt iffy about her as a "detective," and I started to lose track of the new characters and their representations in the Alan Conway version of the story.
This is extra hilarious to me though, considering how a great chunk of the Susan Ryeland story is realizing that Alan Conway actually despised his own creation and considered Atticus Pünd fans idiots. Whoops! I suppose I just have low-brow tastes. While I have my preferences, I think both "Magpie Murders" delivered well-crafted stories—made even better when brought together!

An amazing book. I never especially enjoyed crime/mystery novels but wanted to branch out. This book truly blew me away. If you like crime/mystery novels you will love this book. If you don’t, I do feel like it is different enough from the usual in the genre that you will still like it; as was the case with me.

A good cozy mystery. Reminds me a lot of classic Agatha Christie. Absolutely loved the concept of a mystery book within a mystery book. Was a little confusing at first, but once you got you set format I really enjoyed it.
