Crime fiction is my go-to nonsense distraction when my brain is full. This, however, is something else! Written in the 70s, it’s fairly standard Woman Is Murdered fare, apart from the quality of the writing which is a lot more poetic and smarter than the average.

Interesting insights into old Glasgow and some brilliant Weegie turns of phrase. A couple of gay characters who face some crap, and a surprisingly ‘woke’ detective.

CW: sexual violence, murder, homophobia, sectarianism, domestic violence.

My hubby liked it a lot more than I did.  It wasn't so much a mystery as a 280 page character development piece,  and I didn't much like the character.   It does a good job of creating a sense of place, but the
plot is glacial, and you have to slog along until the last dozen pages or so to have anything happen.  It just wasn't for me.

Having previously read many a book that supposedly 'learned'
their ways from this author's Laidlaw trilogy, it makes reading
this first of the trilogy a bit anti-climactic.
As far as plot/story go it is pretty much average, but the real
reward in reading this was the author's great knack for a
turn-of-phrase. It is all very melancholy but I could not help
but smile at the clever word play and dialogue. Really loved
it. I am almost sure now to dig up Books 2 and 3 and continue
with the enjoyment.
Highly recommended.

Ein guter Krimi, all die Straßen, in die ich mich in diesem Sommer verliebt habe und die schottische Stimme des Autoren. Ein perfektes Hörbuch!
A good thriller, all the streets, into which I fell in love with this summer and the Scottish voice of the author. A perfect audiobook!
