Read as part of my challenge to read the Short Story, Novelette, Novella and Novel: Adult shortlists for the 2023 Ignyte Awards.

I adore Stephen Graham Jones's Lake Witch Trilogy so I was excited to pick up a novella from him. Like a lot of his work, "Men, Women, and Chainsaws" tips its hat to slashers and, at its heart, is the story of a heartbroken young woman who decides to carry out her revenge against her ex-boyfriend with the help of a supernatural car when he returns to their hometown.

I enjoyed it, but I think it says a lot that it's left me with not an awful lot to say about it. Jenna's easy to like and root for and the whole story has a retro charm that will appeal to fans of slashers from the '70s and '80s. In all honesty, though, I might have enjoyed this story more if I cared at all about cars...

This short story is absolutely fantastic. SGJ has done it again. It has typical horror tropes and elements and is not the most unique horror short story of all time but SGJ's writing takes it to a whole different level. It is a very impactful story for how short it is and Jenna felt extremely real and relatable from the first page. Highly recommend as a short but good time.
