Happy Medium

Gretchen, a con artist posing as a spirit medium, goes to a goat farm at the request of one of her clients to help a dear friend deal with a little ghost problem he's having that's preventing him from selling the farm.  She gets there, expecting an  old grizzled farmer only to find his sexy grandson, Charlie, instead.  Cue Squidward "OH NO, HE'S HOT!!!"  Not only is he hot, he's the ultimate skeptic and definitely not a fan of Gretchen.  After ripping her a new one about her wicked ways, he sends her off.  On her way to meet her ride back home, Gretchen stubmles on a ghost.  Not just any ghost, mind you.  Everett is Charlie's....cousin of somekind, you lose count after a while, ya know?  Everett has been cursed to haunt the family farm forever.  And Everett needs Gretchen's help to stop the sale of the farm and save Charlie from a similar ghostly fate!  Gretchen manages to get Charlie to agree to let her stay on for a month to try and convince him, in exchange for working on the farm with him.  The hijinks!
I really liked the idea for this book, but Everett was the star for me!  While I know Charlie didn't have the highest opinion of Gretchen and what she did for work, there were times where he was just SO mean to her.  Like I found myself going "Alright now." like some middle aged soccer dad or something.  And while the entire book took place over just a single month, so much but also so little seemed to happen.  The book dragged in places and then everything would happen!
Overall I enjoyed to book, but maybe it could have been thinned out just a tiny bit.

Sarah Adler's newest release, HAPPY MEDIUM, is a charming, witty, and endearing contemporary romance.

Gretchen Acorn is a con artist with a moral code, as a 'medium' she helps her clients communicate with their loved ones, but only if she thinks she can help her clients grieve. When a regular client requests Gretchen's help with a ghost on her bridge partner's farm, Gretchen finds it hard to say no.

However, the farmer she meets is not the farmer she expected at the farm. Charlie Waybill is young, hot, and wants nothing to do with Gretchen and her schemes. He sends Gretchen away, but as she starts her journey back, she encounters the real ghost haunting the farm, Everett, - and he enlists her help to break the family curse and save Charlie. As Gretchen convinces Charlie to give her one month to help Everett (and him), she figures out that she needs to let go of her con woman tendencies to get Charlie to trust - and maybe love - her.

I was really looking forward to this release, and I wasn't disappointed. The banter and humor between Gretchen and Everett had me cackling throughout the book. Gretchen's character development was wonderful, and the relationship development between her and Charlie was slow and sweet. Gretchen has to face her past and not only be honest with herself, but with Charlie.

This was a lighthearted and fun read full of family, love, and friendship.

This was such a fun romcom book. It didn't hit as hard as Mrs. Nash's Ashes but it was so much fun! I loved the inclusion of goat yoga!!

I like this author a lot. Read Mrs. Nash's Ashes first and loved it. Will continue to read her new books! I like the banter between the main characters and the depth she brings to her female heroines. Cute and funny story!

You had me at paranormal romance on a goat farm with a punny name ✨ 👻 🔮 🐐

Look. I was the targeted demographic for this book and so of course I enjoyed it. Is it my favorite cutesy, Halloween hallmark story? No. But did I have a good time? Absolutely.

Gretchen is a fun and interesting main character. I like her complicated backstory and how her traumas influence a lot of the decisions she makes throughout the story. She is clever and charming and I wanted her to get her happily ever after. Charlie, our romantic lead, has depth and personality AND is a hot, tattooed goat farmer. And our resident ghost, Everett, has some pervy grandpa vibes but is overall a sweet character.

I considered rating this higher because I do enjoy the cast, but the last 25% of the story included some decisions that felt… weird. Rushed maybe? Either way, my suspension of disbelief was knocked off course and I struggled to get it back on for the ending.

3.5 stars - this had the potential to honestly be a 5 star romcom (some of this was so rushed? we really went through all of that with the letter just for it to be nothing?? That and so many other missed opportunities here, I was a bit frustrated in the end), but it was still a cute and fun read!

Also, you get a movie out of this with Glen Powell as Charlie and a get good screenwriter who can channel/fine tune the comedy? 10/10 it would be an instant classic.

Kinda weird but legit read it in less than 24hours so let’s not pretend I wasn’t obsessed.

Oh I loved this SO MUCH. This was a different spin on the movie Ghost - basically if Whoopi Goldberg and Demi Moore were the love interests instead of Patrick Swayze (the Ghost) being Demi’s love interest. I know that sounds weird, but this absolutely worked. Imagine Whoopi is Annie Murphy (Alexis from Schitts Creek) and Demi is Jake McDorman.

Gretchen Acorn is a “spirit medium” conning the rich people in her area by convincing them that their loved ones are reaching out to them beyond the grave. She learns as much info as she can from google searches and from her roommate who acquires intel for her.

One day, a client of hers pays her $10k to go to a goat farm to help her dear friend exorcise a ghost. The client’s friend Charles has been trying to sell his farm, but has been having a hard time due to the ghost scaring off all the prospective buyers. Charles isn’t convinced there’s a ghost, so that is why his friend is intervening and hiring Gretchen, who she believes truly has gifts.

Gretchen is all ready to spend a few days pretending to exorcise the farm and putting on a show, until she realizes the “dear friend” is a hot young guy and not an old man, and after he kicks her to the curb upon introduction she comes face to face with an actual ghost. Now, she has to convince the hot farmer that she’s not a *complete* liar and that she actually does see a ghost, and the ghost of a relative of his who has warned her that if Charlie sells the farm and moves away he’ll die and be doomed to also spend his afterlife roaming the farm in purgatory just like him.

This was funny, heartfelt, sexy, and now one of my new favorite romcoms. I’d also like to mention that Mara Wilson narrates this book (MATILDA!!!) and she does it so perfectly. I laughed so much & had the best time reading this. This definitely has some plot holes so I’d probably rate this 4.5 ⭐️ rather than 5, but this was an amazing story & I definitely recommend it to any of you who love quirky romcoms with emotional depth, LOTS of sexual tension, & sweetness!

Thank you Penguin Random House Audio for this audiobook in exchange for my honest review!
