Could not put it down. After The Strain trilogy I can't wait to see what they do with this.

*Update upon finishing*

I am so glad that I won The Hollow Ones in a Goodreads giveaway! I enjoyed (most) of The Strain trilogy, but I was slightly hesitant about this one. I was intrigued, but just not sure exactly if I was intrigued enough. However, after finishing this one I absolutely can't wait for the next book in this series!!! This one was like Guillermo del Toro meets something like The Dresden Files. It was a fast-paced read and DIFFERENT. I loved this one and I can't wait for the next one. I highly recommend it if it sounds intriguing to you at all, because this was a way better read than the blurb would have you thinking. :D

*Yay! I haven’t won a goodreads giveaway in ages! Well, I haven’t really done a good review in ages either to be fair.

Being a huge fan of del Toro's The Strain, I thought I was going to be in for a fast-paced, action packed horror novel. The Hollow Ones started off right and ended up on a low simmer for the rest of the tale. It's definitely not horror. I'd barely classify it as a thriller. Plus the character development never played out. This story fell flat for me.

The story starts with a young FBI agent named Odessa who has been suspended for shooting her partner after witnessing him have some sort of breakdown during an investigation. She ends up on desk leave and is asked to clean up the office of an agent named Earl Solomon who is in the hospital. When she goes to visit him, he advises her to send a letter to Hugo Blackwood, an occult detective who might be able to help her figure out what happened with her partner's bizarre actions.

This series has a lot of potential to it. It had an interesting set up to things and at one point I was enjoying relating it almost to True Detective (season 2) or Supernatural. The issue was that nothing was really totally fleshed out. It's apparent that Del Toro is very used to writing screenplays because it read like one, and I was hoping Hogan would have helped with the fleshing out. A bit disappointing.

it was good!

—honestly it had some parts where it was definitely way too slow but it picked up. I really did love all the different time periods that was pretty awesome. It was a good read!

Two stars it started out good and spooky but got weird and frankly racist real quick the ending was predictable and disappointing

thrilling occult mystery reading. blew through this in a work week and was not expecting to! very True Detective meets Lovecraft Country. high body count/murdery descriptions so be wary of that. so excited to see where it continues.

I picked this title because I had enjoyed Del Toro’s movies and television show, “The Strain.” But this book…eh. It kept my attention, but didn’t seem very original. Reminded me of the 80’s sci-fi movie, “The Hidden.”

A solid 3.5 stars
