First, I have to say how fast paced and fun this was to listen to.  I started it yesterday morning and listened in one sitting.  I was sucked in and definitely entertained.  That being said, this wasn't really an original idea as the synopsis made it sound.

Let me explain a little on how I rate books, many people do not read my profile, so here it is:
For ☆☆☆ I
Enjoyed reading
Found some minor plot holes
Thought character development needs some work
Felt world building is lacking
Would recommend
Am unlikely to read again
Will likely read next in series
Highlight a few memorable points

So for a four star read, those same points are elevated a bit; five stars, highest level of those points. Make sense?

For The Hollow Ones, I am stuck between three and four. The character development in here was excellent. You don't only see the characters' strengths but also their faults and weaknesses. We feel the pain they go through and their desperation. However, I felt the world building was a bit lacking and maybe that will come in the next story (hopefully).

Originality is not really this story's forte. I've seen Fallen in the 90s and it had a very similar premise. But that didn't take away from the enjoyability of the story itself. I read A LOT so I am always looking for a fresh idea and this was sitting under the heating lamp for a couple hours.

There are a few memorable spots I can't stop thinking about and I won't post there here with risk of spoiling but I can't stop thinking why a grown man would want to eat dried out meatloaf.

To be honest, this book was a disappointment. I was expecting something a little more exciting since del Toro’s name was on it, and I did like the premise and the basics of the characters, but when push came to shove it was just sort of boring. Really, the whole affair can be summed up in one word: serviceable. The characters had interesting traits and personalities but were never really pushed or explored. Character dynamics were present but didn’t feel rounded or natural. The prose was fine but never did anything interesting or engaging. Much of the plot, once the basic world-building got out of the way, felt predictable. Nothing about this work was glaringly bad, but none was good, either.

I will also have to knock it for the subplot which not so subtly implies that Odessa is fated to be and will fall in love with Blackwood, which is a trope/plot device I despise. In this instance, it is not morally reprehensible or anything, it is just what in conventional parlance would be called Extremely Fucking Stupid. An absolutely useless addition to the plot and character dynamic.

Enjoyed this. This is not what anyone would call fine literature or anything, but it's a quick, enjoyable, entertaining read. The premise is that these dark entities can occupy people for periods and cause chaos, murder, all kinds of crap, then just move on and occupy somebody else. Blackwood is the occult detective who goes looking for them to capture them.

I did not hate this book. It was an entertaining read, but it was not a book that held me in deep suspense over what would happen next. I felt like I had a good idea where we were going most of the time.

I received this as a Goodreads Giveaway. Honestly that’s the only reason I finished reading it. It was very hard to get through. The writing didn’t flow. Ideas felt disjointed. Just not worth the time it took to read it, unfortunately.

A highly enjoyable horror detective novel. I'm really hoping that we get more of these, or at least a TV show or movie or something. I could feel how much fun they had writing it and the horror elements were on point. Very interesting characters, well told story, definitely want more.

Ever see the movie Fallen, with Denzel Washington and John Goodman? Yeah, it's like that only not as good. I should have known better after the Strain trilogy took a nosedive in the third book. Just utterly conventional and pretty devoid of imagination. I won't read more and am kind of annoyed with myself that I bothered with this one.
