I enjoyed this. It was a good October read. Like a beach read for when it's cold and spooky. A blanket and rain read, perhaps? It's a very quick, easy book to get through—like the novelization of a pilot for an upcoming TV series, to be honest. So while it lacks depth, the X-files meets Hellblazer story intrigued me enough. However, if you've had your fill of mysterious, surly white British men who hold the answers you might not be as big a fan.

I'm a HUGE fan of del Toro's, and I've always meant to check out The Strain. In fact, I have a used hardcover on my shelf now. But The Hollow Ones grabbed my attention with its shiny newness. I'm glad I read it, even if the results don't have the emotional depth of del Toro's best work. I'm assuming most of the actual execution is left to Hogan, and he's a competent storyteller. I'd be game to read the next one.

I love del Toro and like the story here but it’s just not very well written in my opinion.

Dark and very creepy, I see this as a horror mystery, where dark forces work with humans to cause and solve crimes. The reason I like mysteries is that they are intense but not too intense. This one is definitely a mystery to read during the day with the lights on!
