I definitely found this book to be less gripping than the first, but such is the reality of many second books in a series. I enjoyed Marcella the most, and I kept reading just to get to her chapters and see how she panned out. The way her plotline concluded was more than a little disappointing to me. I'm not really sure how I feel about this book! If you loved the first one, I think you will love this one, though still not as much. Many of the characters' plotlines were not quite as suspenseful or satisfying as in Vicious.

As much as I enjoyed the first book, this one fell a little flat. It was nice to see new characters introduced, and I liked that there was more action this time, but something felt like it was missing. The best part of the book was getting Eli’s backstory

i really didn’t want to give this book such a low rating, especially since the first one was SO good but this one just didn’t do it for me. it felt pretty pointless, like nothing truly happened despite having over 500 pages (and honestly, i don’t think it needed to be that long).
i also don’t get the purpose of marcella’s storyline. it took up a huge chunk of the book but i was left wondering what it was all leading to.
and i can’t believe eli is dead.. though i have a feeling it won’t be permanent; at least i hope not, because i’m not sure how good the next book will be if he stays dead. fingers crossed it picks up again with the third book because i really do enjoy v.e. schwab’s writing and i plan to check out more of her books.
