After the sudden ending of the previous book, this one just carries on. There are way too many subplots and the paranoia that Scarpetta feels seems to come from the writer....there just doesn't seem to be a clear direction.
The chronology doesn't add up anymore, Scarpetta is aging backwards...it happens with plenty of characters, but since the cast of recurring supporting characters is steady (she seems to only be 10 - 15 years older than her niece, while it was more like 25-30 in the first book) it is annoying to me.
The crimes in this book are outrageous and unbelievable and while we are supposed to get more insight and sympathy for Scarpetta, she just starts to gtrate on your nerves.
Again, I will keep reading the series, because I know it gets better. However, new readers should avoid this one in my opinion.

Kay Scarpetta novels are a continuous series, but they do usually still read as standalones, a bit like randomly watching an episode of Silent Witness. This one however, completely continued on from the previous book Black Notice. Thankfully they're so well written I did retain a lot of the story (it's been quite a few years since I read it).
Because of the continuation of story in this one it did take a while for me to get into it. It wasn't the usual 'body found and investigated' storyline. However, by the second half I couldn't put it down and feel the story progression was outstanding. I've slept on this series for a while but I feel excited to see where Scarpetta's story goes after this.

I liked this book in so many ways bc it went into deeper character analysis of the main characters. This was the first of all of the books in this series when I knew exactly who was involved and how very early on, so that was a bit disappointing.
