Book #13 read in 2012
This was not one of my favorite books in this series. It seemed to drag a little and the idea behind the plot seemed preposterous considering the reader's knowledge of Kay Scarpetta. Hopefully the book succeeds in moving the series forward for the books to come.

Picks up where the last one left off, with the arrest of the French serial killer after he tries to kill Scarpetta. Talk about a book full of paranoia! EVERYONE seems to be out to get her and her stalwart friends, and even Benton comes back into the story. Ugh. Plus, this was not really resolved: she is up before a grand jury deciding on whether to indict her for the death of Chandonne's last victim--she is alleged to have framed him for it while actually doing in the victim herself. So this arc will continue into the next book.
ANNOYING!!!
Why do I continue to read these books??

Usual Scarpetta book
Overall the book is a good read. It follows the usual pattern of the books in the series. It is nice to see some items from the last book get competed.

Maybe 3.5, it held my attention and I wanted to keep reading to find out what was happening. But I also felt like too much was happening to keep track of some things. There were too many people involved. I also sense this story line isn't over but I think it should be.
The way the characters are being portrayed is not making me like any of them. Cornwell needs to tone it tone a bit, they're too extreme.

I keep reading this series, because I find the forensics interesting, and because I think Patricia Cornwell is a good writer. Unfortunately, I think she needs to rein her plot in a bit. A few of the plot twists in this book are very good, but many others come across as being forced. In this type of series, one would assume at some point that the main character would be accused of murder, but this one doesn't work that well. I found much of this book to be an angry mess.
