A Vow So Bold and Deadly by Brigid Kemmerer
⭐️ Rating: 4/5
🔥 Spice: 1/5 – Minimal and implied when referenced.

Brigid Kemmerer brings the Cursebreaker series to a close with A Vow So Bold and Deadly, delivering an emotional but somewhat anticlimactic conclusion to the tensions between Emberfall and Syhl Shallow. While the story remains engaging, the final showdown didn’t quite deliver the high-stakes battle I was expecting.

With Emberfall divided, Grey has given Rhen 60 days before launching an attack—an ultimatum that seems strange given the stakes but makes sense on an emotional level given their newfound sibling bond. Meanwhile, Rhen spends much of this book trying to figure out how to defeat someone with magic, while Lia Mara struggles to rule Syhl Shallow and prove herself a capable queen. As tensions rise, an unexpected return from the past disrupts everything—Lilith, the sorceress who cursed Rhen in the first book, reemerges to manipulate him once more, shifting the final battle in an entirely different direction.

What I Loved:
- Character Development – Despite my disappointment in the final battle, I appreciated the emotional growth of the characters, especially Grey and Rhen learning to navigate their relationship as brothers.
- Happily Ever After – I was genuinely relieved that neither brother died, and all the major characters got a satisfying conclusion. Given how much I’ve grown attached to them, I’m glad the series ended on a positive note.
- Political Intrigue & Leadership Struggles – I liked seeing Lia Mara’s challenges as queen, proving that ruling is far more complicated than expected.

What Didn’t Work for Me:
- Anticlimactic Ending – The final showdown between Rhen and Grey, which had been building for so long, was essentially dismantled by Lilith’s reappearance. Instead of the emotional battle I was expecting, the story pivoted, making the resolution feel rushed and underwhelming.
- Pacing & Tension – With 60 days before an attack, there was a lot of waiting, planning, and internal conflict, which slowed down the momentum I had hoped for in a finale.

Final Thoughts: A Vow So Bold and Deadly provides a satisfying conclusion for fans invested in these characters, even if the final conflict felt a bit flat. While I would have loved a more intense climax, I still enjoyed the story and appreciated that it wrapped up on a hopeful note. It’s an enjoyable read, but nothing phenomenal.

I borrowed this as an ebook from the library but didn't finish reading it before it was automatically returned. I put in another request for it and hope to finish it the next it's available to check out.

I’ve now finally mostly gotten over the fact that I read the first book as a new release and didn’t know it was a series until the end of the book.

Look, this was very brutal and people died. I nearly vomited in my car on my way to work, because the description of these deaths was so chilling.
Did that stop me from racing through? No.
Did it take about 50% of the book to get through the politics? Yes.
Overall, a great ending to the series; it probably could have been a bit shorter in places, but in all, I loved it.

First book of the series is the best. Disappointing finale. Didn’t really care how the author went with some of the characters. Four POVs written and one was just boring to read about and found myself skipping ahead because it was repetitive.

Sadly, life happened and it threw me in a reading slump fairly soon after I started this book. When all I wanted was to get lost in it but I felt myself withering every time I needed to re-read the same sentence because my heart wasn't in it...

I managed to come out of it at my own pace and, have finally been able to enjoy it to it's fullest! This book - well, this whole series! - has been a rollercoaster ride of emotions. I have loved that every choice has a consequence, sometimes even the right choice. I have loved how real it feels to the characters, that there are lives at stake and futures. I have loved that there isn't a right or wrong side, this isn't a good guys versus the bad guys. This is just... Different perspectives on the same situations.

I have SCREAMED at this book so much, I'm surprised my neighbours haven't called the cops. It's been wonderful and the only thing I wish is that my own life hadn't taken my head down a path where it deprived me of the joy of reading...

When all is said and done, the question becomes, how will you find a way to move forward?
