Wonderful collection of short stories with settings ranging from Haiti to Miami, NYC, and an imaginary Caribbean island. The imaginary island was a fascinating vision. This is the first work I’ve read by Danticat and it certainly won’t be the last.

I'm not a big short story person but this collection kept me interested and I was disappointed when a few of them ended - I definitely wanted a couple to keep going.

I really struggled with how differently I connected to each of these stories. Some I would live to revisit, and some I immediately forgot.

Ugly sobbed over this..
It’s so beautifully written and each story is captivating and witty or just devastating.

Even though this book didn’t blow me away the way I wanted it to. I can appreciate how much I saw my family and community in the snapshots of the characters life.

It wasn’t my ‘normal’ type of book but I really enjoyed reading the short stories.
