I was apprehensive about this book because a lot of people said that the first one (the family upstairs) was a lot better but I haven’t read it so I can’t really speak to that. That being said, I LOVED this book. No surprise there!! I am a huge huge Lisa Jewell fan and when I saw this I just had to pick it up.

Jewell is particularly good at having multiple storylines simultaneously running that take place at different times. The characters were very well developed and the story itself was gripping. I’d say her other books are more disturbing than this one (but don’t get me wrong, this one was plenty dark.) I would definitely recommend!!

3.5 ⭐️

Definitely didn’t enjoy this as much as the first book, but still really liked reading it. Rachel was my favorite perspective to read, but also my least: loved her as a character but I couldn’t help but getting filled with anger as soon as Michael popped up. Seeing everyone else again, though, was super nice and we got even a bigger perspective on the initial story than I thought we could. Overall very nice read :)

I mean... it was fine I guess.

The Family Upstairs was enjoyable but I don't think it needed a sequel, and having now read the sequel I'm no more convinced of its necessity.

It wasn't really a thriller, nor did it have any twists except one which wasn't particularly dramatic. It felt like a continuation of the character stories which were then mushed into the shape of a thriller because that's the genre that Lisa Jewell writes in.

Entertaining enough, nothing to gush over.

I go from not wanting the police to uncover more to hoping they make it in time to catch Henry. And definitely did not want Justin to take the blame for killing Birdie because I didn't trust Henry but it turned out in the end (still a little wary of him). The author said that she wrote this book because she wanted to spend more time in Henry's head and she definitely took me for a ride. I'm still not over his unreliable-ness of the first book but they were all in a terrible situation and also he had literally only lived 15 years so the conversation at the end between him and Phin made sense.

I'm so glad Rachel and Lucy are free from annoying and terrible Michael. The relationship between Rachel and her dad was so sweet, probably my favorite part of the book!!
It wasn't as tense as the first one but that's ok and it's great to see where characters can go after the initial bad things happen.
