I'm glad to see this is the first book in a series because it makes sense now why some of the subplots remain open/unanswered at the end. That made me bump the rating up slightly, but I still struggled to get all the way to 3 stars (although the open subplots are promising). It is a quick read and a page turner with some strong characters, but everything doesn't fit cohesively together as much as I hoped. The main character is a little too unrealistically super-heroine for me, but the supporting cast has at least one stand-out (but a few boring additions). The plot was the highlight for me, along with how easily Baldacci seamlessly balanced small town life near the grand canyon with an international nuclear arms conflict without it ever seeming comedically out of place.
Absolutely absurd plot, even by Baldacci and genre standards. A struggle to finish.
An interesting start and introduction to a new character, but it goes downhill quickly.
Several pointless chapters of unnecessary detail that seem to exist simply because the author researched the subjects (weightlifting, car restoration... even the Grand Canyon is over done)
There are also several pointless and/or improbable events which don’t move the plot forward, or exist just to show how much of an invincible badass the main character is. Also why would she have a Wikipedia page for failing to make an olympic team? Why is she so broke when she has nothing to spend money on, lives in small town nowhere and makes an FBI salary?
Anyway, I don’t have high expectations for factory authors like Baldacci, but this was a major disappointment.

Typical David Baldacci book where it starts out great and then turns into a convoluted conclusion. It’s a shame, especially since the first chapter was absolutely amazing. I thought we were going to have a book where Agent Atlee Pine would be going after a serial killer that she suspects murdered her twin sister, Mercy, when they were 6 years old. Instead the story detours on a road a long way off from Mercy dealing with dead mules, nuclear bombs, and Russia. I guess a future book will involve her sister since that plot line was interesting. Until then, this series is a waste of time. On a positive note, Orlagh Cassidy doesn’t do the audiobook (yay!!!).

Another Baldacci hit. I loved the research in to the Grand Canyon making a fictional book so realistic unexpected plot. Very different
