If there was the option to give a book zero stars I would have chosen it for this worthless piece of drivel. Maguire's prose is as good and readable as ever, but in the case of the frenetic and uneven story of Winnie Rudge I have to wonder why one would bother. This book was annoying to read, and I think that Maguire should stick with what he knows: Rewriting other people's great ideas, because when it comes to relying on his own imagination he fails miserably.
As much as I enjoyed Gregory Maguire's Wicked, I couldn't even believe this book was by the same author. Many of Maguire's works take unlikable, despicable characters and turn them into engaging, sympathetic protagonists. This book, on the other hand, is full of boring, unrelatable characters with little to redeem them. The story plods along and never gives you anything to latch on to, invest in, or care about. This is the first time I've considered reading one of Maguire's novels to be a chore.
Being a big fan of the author I was really disappointed. It's poorly organized and jumps between two stories. The plot was hard to follow and was generally not very interesting.
Worst book ever. Crummy characters, badly written, just a lousy read. I put it in the fire.
Just was not into the story. Also, the main character was super annoying.
Teachers should be required to look up goodreads ratings before adding NONSENSE like this to their curriculum.
When I was a third of the way through I wanted to give this book two stars. The writing was so clever and the many literary and cultural allusions so enlightening and engaging but the plot was so slow. I pretty much knew there had to be a twist but I think I needed to be slightly more entertained while I waited for it.
By the time I was welcomed into the idea that Winnie was indeed Wendy and that we were finally entering into the real meat of the story I became voracious and had to make myself read every word so as not to miss out on any clues or pretty scenery. The theme of being lost to yourself, not knowing or caring where you end up next is a familiar one and I love the way this book explored it. By the time i finished, I wanted to give it four stars but I just can't QUITE forget that beginning. Three stars we stay. But still. Quite good.
