I love the retelling genre, which is how overtime I keep getting drawn to Maguire. I think it is about time to finally give up on reading him because i just don't enjoy his writing style; The characters seem unreliable and lack depth and the story jut seems to go on and on. In this story I appreciated the literary references and comparisons, especially when referring to children books' characters but unfortunately those references are few. Try this, I hope you enjoy it more than I did.

I needed a change from fraught non-fiction and fiction. This was nice respite. It wasn't as cheesy as a pure horror book, but it wasn't too deep either, just a little I would think someone who likes ALL the Light We cannot See might .like this book.

I really enjoyed wicked but just hated this "ghost" story
dark mysterious sad medium-paced

I've read some of his other books but just couldn't force myself through this one fast enough. I didn't enjoy it in the slightest and found myself skimming the pages just in order to find out what happened so I wouldn't be left actually want it to finish it.

This book was all over the place. Not enjoyable. Couldn't wait for it to be over. I guess you can say I got Lost.

I liked the writing/style, settings, characters/relationships, dialogue, and references. Although I would say I appreciated certain style techniques in the storytelling, I think I ended up not being a big fan of the story itself. Or perhaps I was until the bizarrely quiet-yet-reflective resolve. An enjoyable enough reading experience.

It held my attention fairly well, but it stopped making sense after a while and quickly unraveled toward the end. Kinda disappointing.

Very strange. A disappointment after Wicked.

Well, I didn't really "read" this. I stopped about halfway through. Gregory Maguire, what happened? The idea of this book is great--but I just could not get into the story. I found it incoherent and boring. Also the main character, Winifred Rudge, is a total drag.
So disappointed. I should have just re-read "Wicked."
