I wasn't as impressed with Maguire's tale in "Lost." I like his writing style, and I was a huge fan of "Wicked" but this left something to be desired.
I almost moved this to the DNF pile in the beginning...it was confusing and didn't seem to have a clear focus. However, as it started to move and the pieces came together, I ended up enjoying it and finding it pretty profound and lovely. 3.5 rounded down.
I find I’m hit-or-miss with Gregory Maguire books and this one is leaning toward miss. It took a while to get into the storyline, and I actually wondered when I’d get to what the cover is in reference to with a woman behind Scrooge. When it finally got into any kind of story, I found myself just wanting to get through it. If you’re used to his style of putting his own twists on well-known stories, do not go in expecting something like that.
2.5 stars. I remember liking this more the first time I read it. It is, in it's own way, a ghost story and psychological thriller/mystery.
I didn't really care for Wicked so I don't really know why I thought I would like this book. I thought the synopsis sounded really intriguing, however, and I have a softspot for serial killers.
A story told well, but I'm not sure it makes sense looking back. Knowing the ending makes me want to reread it looking for clues, but.... Not enough TO actually reread it.
really did not understand what was going on. too much going on all at the same time - Alice in Wonderland here, Peter Pan there, Jack the Ripper a couple of times, and A Christmas Carol thrown in. plus the ending was kind of useless. it really didn't wrap everything up in a nice bow; it just kind of ended.
I am a fan of Maguire's work so it pains me to say this, but this one was a bit much. I know that his writing can be considered quite "rich", if you will, but this one was just wordy and confusing at times. I liked the story, but it felt like I could see the story through all of the words...if that makes sense. I would have also really loved a more fulfilling ending. Just like with "out of oz", the ending left me wanting, and not in a good way. I always ask myself "Are you glad you read it" and with this book I'm just glad I got through it.
This is one of the few books that I wish I had read an abridged version of. It was a long, confusing tale that could have been less confusing and more enjoyable with about half the verbiage and monotony.
