Ooh I really liked this one. This one made me realise that in certain types of stories I tend to side with the "evil" ones. Books where the evil is some kind of pagan woman being hunted or controlled or judged by non-pagan idiot men. The Wicker Man for example. This book. Yeah. So it's possible I read this one differently to other people and so appreciate on a whole other level.

That said it could have been better. I mean it's pretty short and has a not very immersive narrative structure. The ending was rushed and basically skips any real confrontation. So yeah, could have been better. But it's still really enjoyable.

that was creepy as hell. how have we gone 130 years without a movie/TV adaptation of this? I'm calling Noah Hawley

read for candidacy and tbh just pushed all the right buttons for me, down to the title being an EBB reference!

You gotta love occultists and mad scientists sprinkled with pagan gods! It's great that Machen doesn't describe anything too precisely, but leaves the most horrible things to the mercy of the reader's imagination. I usually like descriptions, but some authors manage to make the story work without it. The characterisation wasn't the best, and the story itself was somewhat predictable. I still enjoy reading Victorian gothic and horror tales, which usually stops me from giving less stars than three. The stories are always full of atmosphere, and it's fun to see what kind of things made people's skin crawl back in the day.

I read this as part of the #sassyreads readalong in May and I have to say it gave me quite a few giggles. this isn't the sort of novella I would typically choose for myself, it has gothic sex and horror all blended in together, but I did actually enjoy it.

This follows the story of a young woman who sees the Great God Pan after a nasty experiment by a rather detestable man. From this point on she's forever altered and various odd and creepy situations begin to arise.

I don't want to give mush more away as really it is very short, but this has a LOT of innuendo, a lot of sexual tension, cheeky description and some (let's say light) horror elements. It's witty at times and downright silly at times, but it's very much of the time it was written. A fun enough read 3*s

Nice and short little mystery story. I'll admit that this book had a lot of characters dying of shock and the beat got pretty repetitive. I would have liked a chapter on the confrontation with the main antagonist; we are told what happens but it was quite fast and jumpy. But overall, the gothic prose was smooth to read, the story was intriguing, and the resolution was satisfying.

Really good, thoroughly enjoyed the various unfoldings
