Unusual in style but intriguing. I love stories about the history of NYC. This a great memoir and family story.

Despite the title/cover, this is in no way an angry or cynical book. It's a love song to New York and to the author's family and to their family business. And it's the type of memoir that you want to live in: that time, that place, those people.

I couldn't put this book down. Shopsin has a line about her parent's restaurant: "It was a forum of philosophy and hot sauce." In a way, her book is a similar mixture of spicy stories and descriptions of a unique approach to life. It's also a loving tribute to Willy, the Shopsins' colorful and much-loved family friend. Having put a fair amount of effort into creating order and routine for my kids when they were growing up, I was sometimes rendered wide-eyed with surprise at the chaos of Shopsin's upbringing. But I was also completely engaged by her anything-could-happen-and-probably-will type stories of her home, family and New York City. And I loved the way her book was as lively, surprising and full of the things that matter to her as her family's store.
