Apparently, I just glanced at the cover and saw what I wanted to see - a big hulking shape like a monster from “Where the Wild Things Are” and assumed the inside matched the image I had in my head.
I didn’t even read the summary.
I got something different than I expected. A recounting of a true event that was harrowing and scary and something that feels too real to be true.
I’m so glad i read this.

"Where the World Ends" is a haunting novel set in the 18th century. McCaughrean did a fantastic job describing the beauty and desolation of the islands that comprise the furthest reaches of the British Isles. The story was well-crafted and the narrator was perfect for the role.

Basically just the lord of the flies but richer with culture and less horrific but not altogether so.
This book was so visceral & evocative, I don't even know where to begin. The last third of it grabbed me by the loops of my collarbones and screamed in my face (yes this is a reference). I loved it, and I know that it will stay on my mind for a very long time, as did the last McCaughrean book I read nearly 20 years ago. Just so satisfyingly rich with tragedy, the boys' culture, religion and fear, in an organic way. I've been mostly dissatisfied with a lot of the novels I've read lately, this made me feel alive again? God that sounds so maudlin, but it did ... at THIS exact weird time in my life, it did.

Fascinating story with a Scottish narrator....there were several words that I was unsure of as I listened, and I would love to see pictures of the stac and the area, so off to Google!
First of all, my number one reason for working at a library is I get first dibs on books like this. That's right, patrons - I snagged this before it reached our shelves. I want to compare this novel to Lord of the Flies, but I also want to tell you that it is so much more.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️
I wish I liked this book more than I did.
I wish I actually DNFd it instead of letting it put me in a reading slump for the entirety of August.
But here I am.
I can say that I finished this book and officially got nothing from it.
I had hoped this book would have a similar vibe to Lord of the Flies, but it really didn't. It was more of a survival story without any drama. Everything was calm for the most part, and the drama that did happen wasn't very interesting and didn't make me any more captivated by the book.
I'm glad that I finished a book this month, but I wish that I wouldn't have spent so much time on a book I didn't even enjoy.
