Very informative in a sad way. The mental illness of the quadruplets was always second to their image. One wonders how they would have been had they been raised with love.

The first half was a very interesting exploration of the lives and well being of the Morlok sisters but the second half sort of lost me. It explores a lot of the evolution of mental health and its social understanding/implications. Which was interesting, but not really what I picked the book up for.

So darkly surprising. I learned a lot and it made me want to talk about with everyone - so many different threads. I did start to feel a bit lost in the second half - I guess I was more interested in hearing about the girls as kids though the real world implications of the flaws in our mental health system and religious undertones were certainly fascinating and heavy.

I found this book interesting but not memorable. I would comp it to "Hidden Valley Road: Inside the Mind of An American Family".

I really enjoyed this until I was approximately 80% through and then she got really into a lot of deep psychology theory and history, and she lost me. I don't know if it was the style of writing, or if it could've used another edit, or if she didn't understand what she was writing and was pulling from her research, but it was honestly a struggle. All of the chapters directly relating to the Quadruplets and their family were great, though.
