It is what it is.  A war story, describing a non-nuclear World War III, if it had happened in 1988.  Tense, gripping, technical combat scenes, fast-paced, well thought out plotting, and interesting perspectives on what combat does to decision-making.  This, for my money, is far and away Tom Clancy’ best book.  He doesn’t even pretend to care about character development or nuance.  Which is good, because he sucks at those.

(What it isn’t, therefore, is one of his bloated, sexist, wish-fulfillment fantasy books like the last 40+ Jack Ryan novels.  Literally no one knows how many of those he ended up publishing.  It’s impossible to tell.  Don’t read any of those after Sum of All Fears.)

Red Storm Rising is fantastic.

A wargame scenario masquerading as a (overly long) novel. And yet, Red Storm Rising is an entertaining enough and at times exciting time-capsule of the Cold War and fears of it turning hot.

This is my second attempt at reading this novel and my first Tom Clancy book. My initial attempt was several years ago and I got about 150 pages in before I set it aside for something else. I was just not in the mood for all the minutia of land, air, and naval tactics being laid out. This go-around however, I was in a better frame of mind for Clancy's style.

My favorite parts were the scenes of tank and land battles. They were the most action packed and easiest to follow and I enjoyed the perspective from the Soviets. My interest generally waned whenever there was yet another chapter or section following the sub hunting ship or the USS Chicago. After awhile, it all just kind of ran together in my mind.

Although the Cold War is officially long over, it's hard not to occasionally think of the current Russian invasion of Ukraine while reading Red Storm. While many things have change, other's remain unfortunately the same.
