A cute coming-of-age story that would be perfect for the right audience. The themes were SO heavy handed though. (Literally Ri at the end of the book: “wow I saw how drugs ruined my moms life so now I know drugs are bad!!”

For as long as Ri remembers her grandma never wanted to talk about her Mexican heritage. She was always told that they live in America and that was all that matters. Another thing Ri could never understand was why her mom left and why Grandma never wanted to talk about it. After Ri finds a letter from her Mom, she becomes determined to get in contact with her and learn about her heritage that he grandma has been hiding for so long.

The story is very much about discovering oneself and acceptance. I loved the characters in this book and the relationships/friendships were very sweet. There are some difficult topics in this book but the author handles them extremely well. This book was such a great read and I highly recommend it!

Thank you to Harper Teen for sending me a copy of this book!

✨synopsis✨

For Ri Fernández’s entire life, she’s been told, “We live in America and we speak English.” Raised by her strict Mexican grandma, Ri has never been allowed to learn Spanish. What’s more, her grandma has always pushed Ri away from the neighborhood they call home and toward her best friend’s world of mansions and country clubs in the hopes that it’ll bring Ri closer to achieving the “American Dream.”

In her most private thoughts, Ri has always believed that her mother, who disappeared when she was young, would accept her exactly how she is. So when Ri finds a secret unanswered letter from her mom begging for a visit, Ri decides to reclaim what her grandma kept from her: a language and a mother. But nothing goes as planned. Her mom isn’t who Ri imagined she would be. And Ri’s struggling to navigate the different interweaving threads of her mixed heritage that make her who she is. Nobody has any idea of who Ri really is—not even Ri, herself.

I really enjoyed this one ❤️ I found the relationship between Ri and her grandmother really interesting to read about as they were both flawed characters that were trying their hardest to do what they thought was right. It is quite a heavy and emotional book so don’t go into it expecting a lighthearted romcom, but it’s definitely worth a read and it was lovely to watch Ri connecting with her culture
