Pres. Carter was prescient on many of the most important issues of our lifetimes. He was simply _right_ about Americans needing to be less wasteful of our resources. He was right about skyrocketing health care costs being unsustainable. He was right to pressure dictatorships about their human rights records, and to push for regime change. Gerrymandering of districts. Racial equality. National debt. Trade balance. Pollution. On so many things, he was startlingly prescient.

I think one of his greatest weaknesses as president was his concentration on details rather than setting broad principles and leaving details to trusted deputies. Another weakness was his insistence on a balanced budget regardless of harsh circumstances that harmed the very people who had put him in office. I think he should have stayed at the level of governor. He got beyond his ability to hold a complex governance in his hands.

He is, without a doubt in my mind, the best former president we have ever had. The Carter Center has done immensely important work. His personal faith is now being shown to its best effect, and where it is most appropriate - in the private sector.

It's so interesting to hear events from his own viewpoint. With apologies to the great man, he seems not to have any aptitude for introspection or understanding of his own half-examined motivations for his actions. Anyone with different agenda or priorities is considered an obstacle to his own goals. I see this as an outgrowth og his inflexible worldview based on his faith, to wit, I'm right because I'm God's spokesman, so get on my bandwagon. At the same time, he could be a very humble man without an obvious ego. Nonetheless, he could make huge decisions without even consulting his wife. He's a conundrum.

I'm glad I listened to this audiobook and I have learned quite a lot from Pres. Carter's own viewpoint.

I really enjoyed reading this, though at times the stories felt disjointed or ended abruptly. If you know little about Jimmy Carter, this might not be the best place to start, but the book gives a thorough sense of who he is as a person and covers many of the key moments of his life. He may be too moderate for my modern political tastes, but he is a fundamentally good man and easily has been the greatest former president ever- he’s been a model for leadership after leaving the White House and accomplished more after leaving office than he did in it (and he did a lot while in office).

Enjoyed the audiobook, read by Carter, though brief essay format is a bit choppy that way at times. Loved his stories about growing up and the many ways he contributed to his community before becoming president. An admirable person in so many ways.
