Nothing stands out, they are a couple who slowly falls in love after marriage. I just couldn’t wait for the story to be over, I was bored
A slow burn romance with a satisfying conclusion. The chemistry is not rushed and slowly burning throughout the book. The beautiful complications that tied them together made the story engaging. What started with Aidan honoring the dead man's wish that saved his life a while ago turned into a duty that he should fulfill. That wish is to protect his sister no matter what happened and he did that dutifully. Although there are some obstacles, both are strong headed, Eve is an independent woman that doesn't want anyone's help, especially Aidan, and Aidan is a persistent man who will homor his promisbto a dead man no matter what. So you see, they truly are a match made in heaven
The story is not bad, the fact that the main characters have to marry for other reasons that are not love is a good storyline, in my opinion. The problem is that you don't get to see how they start falling in love, because they have other obligations and it's a pity.

Ms. Balogh delivers!
This quiet romance resulting from a marriage of convenience hit the spot. As with this author's author works, there is even keeled romance. Both our leads are good people in that real sense - noble (to a fault sometimes) and kind - which makes me root for their romance.
The writing is so not OTT but very well done. This wasn't as angsty as some of Ms. Balogh's other books and had very little histrionics. There are no bolts of lightning or instant connection here - which will make for a slow read, but I found that relaxing. The ending has a bit of overlong declaration but I was invested in the couple enough to forgive them some obvious (from my omnipotent perspective) communication problems.
I will say that the standalone character for me was Wulf - the chilling elder brother / Duke / head of the family / monocle aficionado. I also like the family side characters - which is good given that the series is to follow them.

This was really cozy, things kept happening all the time but in the background. I don't think I have read many books that are written this way, it was something new, not bad but some scenes could have been longer.
I don't like it when there's too much talk about a proper man being this or that way, too much playing into traditional gender roles. Also calling other people lame ducks.. ig he learned at the end?
But I did enjoy the dynamic of the main couple, where one would come up with a scheme or impulsively do something and the other would just go with the flow. They were both quite considerate, to a fault actually. After about 80% I was begging for them to just speak plainly istg they took forever to confess.
I also liked that it began with both of them having had their sights on someone else but gradually discovering their compatability. They literally internally also had the same lines of thought, I thought it was a cute touch.
But ngl Eve is better than me cause if the kids I raised could not warm up to me properly after a year but in just a few evenings opened up with some strange man .... sry it'd eat me alive
Except for some things I found annoying I liked this more than expected. The end dragged a little for me but I'm happy overall.
(I just saw that this is slow paced?! I felt it much faster because the scenes are so short...wow)
