I love how this has a bit of a BBC romance mini-series vibe! It’s a marriage of inconvenience, with no insta-lust and no body betrayal.
The characterizations were well done. I like Eve. And I really like how Balogh has a range of hero archetypes. It’s pretty boring to always be reading about alpha rakes that are terrible to the heroine because REASONS, and then, they are instantly forgiven after one paltry grovel. Instead, Aiden is given a much more nuanced and interesting character arc and development.

Updated thoughts after reread number 5ish: the more I read other books in the genre, the more my appreciation for this one grows.
A marriage of convenience where they are each just what the other needs. I’ll be honest, this has some of my favourite sex scenes. I liked the characters, story and writing too.

I found the story slow and it took a long time before I cared about the characters. The romance really couldn’t be felt until later in the book and this is what made it more enjoyable. The depth of the characters and their drives weren’t really touched on enough.
Not the best Balogh book, but certainly not the worst. Eve and Aiden are engaging enough characters and the romance builds nicely. My biggest complaint is that it's a bit plodding. Neither Eve nor Aiden has enough spark to make the story more than just ok. It's a comfortable enough read, good for a lazy day, but it could use just a little bit more to make it properly engaging
It wasn't terrible, but it was way too sexed up for pure genre purposes and it felt very unnatural for the characters as they were described.
As the results the characters seem stiff and inconsistent - like an amateur puppet show. I enjoyed the premise and the setup, and there was a lot there that could have been beautifully explored, but wasn't, or the exploration was half-assed. Based on the setup it could have transcended the genre, but the author decided not to take it past the trashy romance level, unfortunately. So. Much. Wasted. Potential. Now I want someone to take the initial material and do this for real - with consistent well developed characters, and a more life-centered plot.
