If you love Tolkien or Lewis, and especially if you're Canadian, you should read this!
adventurous challenging dark tense fast-paced

The first book in the Fionavar Tapestry trilogy, I had a little trouble getting into this book, however it did not last long, maybe the first chapter or two. After that i was hooked the story is well crafted and i can not wait to start the second part.

It has some good moments but I seriously struggled to understand why characters took certain actions. I'd describe this book as having a dreamlike quality in which things happen that I feel like I'm supposed to understand but then just didn't. Idk maybe the next few books will help answer some of my questions.

Started as a Tolkien clone but feels like so much more as the story went along.

Some times it seems like that if you could just escape the trouble of your life and "start over" that you could avoid dealing with all the bad in the past or things that you dread in your near future. In reality, until it is really dealt with (not shoved under a rug, not pretending like everything is ok, and not sulking and making everyone beg for the old you) you can't move forward. The old you can't come back but a new you can emerge that is stronger for what it has come through. This seems to be what this story is about.

This was a very solid start to what purports to be a great sci-fi fantasy combo trilogy. For a reason unknown, a mage from the first world journeys to earth to bring 5 people back to the first world. He gives a reason which is somewhat true to convince them to come. They make use of the one person on earth that he knew had to be in the group to travel back together. All of these people are broken though. All appear to have secrets, some of which, they aren't even quite aware of themselves.

I'll update here when I finish the series but its off to such a start that when I reached the end, I said, "Wow."

I would recommend this book for a book club.

Content: There's some adult content dealing with alcohol abuse, trickery for sex, guilt over death of a friend, rape, and torture. It all seems placed for a deliberate purpose. None of it seems gratuitous or excessively described but some readers have sensitivities that make this noteworthy. This holds NO candle to the content in GoT or frankly even Wheel of Time has more description and carrying on than this. If you can take that, this will seem like nothing.

After finishing the series, I would recommend it. Be aware, book 2 will feel like a hard left turn but its worth pushing through.
