So very slow and hard to follow at times. A never ending cast of characters that make connecting to any one character difficult
What a wonderful wacky fantasy. Lovecraft is flexing his worldbuilding while also creating an epic psychedelic fantasy. Very enjoyable especially if you don't mind a more "out there" story.

I'd rather eat all purpose flour from the bag than read this again.
Far from Lovecraft's best, but beautifully illustrated by Von Sholly.

A great read for any who love mystery and cosmic horror
Certainly one of the most bizarre and most difficult books I've had to keep up with. I would not call it horror but given the time it was written I can understand how it would be classified as such.
4 stars because it was amazing in its imagination and philosophical context around dreams and multi-verses. I valued the book even more when I accidentally read about the author's circumstance when writing this (he was just coming back from a writing hiatus).
Missed the 5 star because the language was tough, really tiring to read. Simply not my style.

This dreamland story surprised me. You usually don't hear about it among the best works in Lovecraft's oeuvre, but it ticks all the boxes for me. Written before the Cthulhu mythos really came together, Kadath nonetheless has some of the most palpable descriptions of Azathoth and Nyalathotep found anywhere in Lovecraft's writings. That said, there's a lot more light, color, and whimsy in this story than in the bleaker works for which Lovecraft is more well known. The passage with the Night Gaunts, Ghasts, Gugs, and Ghouls is one of the best suspense sequences I've ever read. Describing this story as Lovecraft's "Alice in Wonderland" wouldn't be so far from the mark. Really good.
