I’ve been a fan of the manga and anime series of Death Note for years, and finally decided to read this spinoff novel. It’s set in an alternate universe where L beat Light and survived, and now has 21 days to crack a new case. While I enjoyed getting to read another story about L, I found the beginning of the novel confusing. The villains felt clichéd and cartoony, and the new characters introduced weren’t particularly interesting or likeable. The nostalgia I felt from reading something associated with Death Note kept me more engaged than the plot itself did. I would have considered DNFing if the book had been much longer, but I did end up being glad I finished it.
Graphic: Death of parent, Pandemic/Epidemic
Moderate: Gun violence, Medical content, Kidnapping, Murder, Injury/Injury detail
Minor: Blood
This was an okay spin off to the Death Note series. Like the BB Murders book, this has some spoilers for Death Note, so it's recommended that you read the main series before these spin offs.
This read a bit like fanfiction, to be honest. What we would call an alternate universe or AU of the canon story. I can't go into details, but to be as vague as I can this does have some different endings to the main Death Note series, in order to make the book work.
It's a strange one. At first, I had absolutely no idea what was going on and it took me about 50 pages or so to really understand the story.
The villains were laughably bad. Their motive was ridiculous: it was like a cartoon villain motive. I didn't much care for what was going on, and didn't care how it ended.
I can honestly say that you don't need to read this or the BB murders book if you have finished Death Note. I would be perfectly happy having not read either of the two books. Both have disappointed me. One day I will re-read Death Note and enjoy it for what it is. But until then, I'll try and forget these spin offs. I don't think that will be too difficult to do.

Well what can I say? I will never get tired of Death Note and having the chance of reading other stories like this one just makes me love it even more.
Here we have the chance of seeing a whole new side o L. That comes with the fact that his life is ending and even for him that's a sad reality that makes memories come to the surface from time to time. As usual he gives all he has to accomplish one last mission, he has to save the world one more time. Those last few pages were very hard to read ... :'(

i haven't watched the film on which this book is based, but i can't help but feel that whoever wrote this, like...doesn't understnd l's mannerisms? he doesn't wink at people or smile mischievously. he doesn't care for japanese sweets. he doesn't yell at the sky? and genuinely, being as big of a fan as i am of l, this mischaracterization of him ruined the entire book for me.

I thought it was an excellent 'what-if' addition to the Death Note universe. I never saw the movie, so everything in the book was a complete surprise to me, and it certainly didn't disappoint.
I like that L, while still undeniably L, takes more of an action stance in this book. His interactions with that little girl are adorable and bring out a side of him that we never got to see, yet is still believable.
New Wammy's Kids are always fun. I enjoyed the tiny tidbit about Q being the one who programed Watari's data deletion software.
What I really liked about the feel of the book was the strangeness that came with L solving a case post-Kira. That the plot is set after Light's defeat and death completely threw me for a loop.
And that ending was pretty perfect-slipping in Near, the Yagami family and the Task Force, and then ending it peacefully with L an his mentor.
Terrific book; would recommend it to any Death Note fan who has finished the manga series.
