While this was different then the movie and the manga, it still was a great book that allowed me to delve in to the mind of L. As well as setting up the beginning of N. I would love to read more about L and his adventures even if it would hurt my head to try and think 100 moves ahead like he dose.

i quite liked this. the writing style was simple, but it got to the point, and it wasn't dull at all. there wasn't any poetic or 'flowery' language (light novels usually lack those) yet i still enjoyed it quite a lot. that was because of its story. i already love death note, and l is a personal favourite of mine. i like how it expanded a lot more on l's character and personality, and it explained why he is the way he is. it also showed that he's actually human, with emotions and feelings, unlike the version of him that we saw in the manga and the anime. this part is going to be a bit spoilery, so read with caution. i like how he actually cares about light, he saw him as a friend, even though he was meant to be his enemy, and how he thinks of misa ever so often. i think if he wasn't put in the situation he was put in, he would've been a great friend to her, and they would've had an incredible friendship. i also quite admire how he sees watari as a parental figure, as he took him in when he was quite young.
overall, i really enjoyed this book, although i thought it was going to be a collection of short stories, and i would recommend it to those who watched death note and liked l as a character, such as myself.

Like the original Death Note series, this light novel had a few problems preventing it from being a 5/5. That being said, L is thoroughly enjoyable and accurate to his original characterization, despite the novel being an au. There are several callbacks to the original, but not in a cliche, overly reliant kind of way. This story still very much is its own even with said callbacks. The original characters for the most part are interesting enough to support L, a pleasant surprise considering the short length of the light novel.
Some of the author’s prose is a little lacking- I believe L is compared to splaying like a frog exposing its belly three separate times in the story. It doesn’t take away from the story other than me personally thinking some of the figures of speech needed to be varied. That’s nitpicking, but I couldn’t help but wish an editor would have suggested some sentences be changed as to help the flow of some paragraphs. Overall I thought the novel was entertaining and is a great read for fans of the series, especially fans of L.

Basically i just loved everything about it. Follows the exact same tone as the anime!
