What an adventure. I can not imagine having the courage, knowledge, and bravery to chase after my parents when they have been taken as prisoners of war.

This book is written in a unique way. At the end of each chapter is a brief description of different aspects of the Revolutionary War: who fought in in, what kind of weapons they used, how prisoners of war were treated, what the American Spirit was.

I liked this book for what it was. I read it out loud to my class as a part of our required curriculum. The students enjoyed the book.

An engaging historical fiction story very suitable for boys 9-14. I learned quite a bit about the Revolutionary War and the frightening randomness of prisoners of war during this 8 year time period.

Eye opening. Not as character driven as Paulsen’s other novels. Some details seemed gruesome but I guess there would be boys really into it.

3.5 stars for me.

I'm not a history buff, so stories like this are valuable for me. It's 1775, and Sam is caught in the middle of the Revolutionary War. His settlement is burned as he's out hunting, and his parents are captured. My awareness of this side of the war (the "I didn't even know there was a war going on and yet my home was attacked" side) was nil, so this easy read was healthy for me.

Meh. There was one sweet moment. The rest was meh. I suppose I am no longer a part of the target demographic.
