I was do proud if myself when I figured out Red's plan just as she was forming it, haha. Such a brilliant book, the format and the story, the worldbuilding. Loved it

I have heard only the vaguest accounts of how good this book is, and it sat on my shelf for a few months before I came around to cracking it open.

“You asked me to tell truths. I have. What do I want? Understanding. Exchange. Victory. A game—hiding and discovery. You’re a swift opponent, Blue. You play long odds. You run the table. If we’re to be at war, we might as well entertain one another. Why else did you taunt me at the start?”

Usually, I am a fan of long books that spin and weave their tales intricately, but Gladstone and El-Mohtar knock this out of the park in so few pages. What starts as enemies mocking one another, blossoms into so much more as the protagonist topples through time and history. I ate every word up, like so many berries, and was left wanting more.

Bravo.

I wanted to enjoy this more than I did. I don’t think I am the target audience for the prose in this one.

A really fun and well-executed story. Not particularly profound, but where it lacks in depth it makes up for in colorful prose. I wasn’t expecting it to be a romance but I don’t mind it. Definitely more vibey and less plot driven. Cute :)
