Not usually a big superman fan, this story completely captivated me. An alternate history of Superman in the USSR is awesome. It amazingly written and drawn just as well. Superman himself does not change per say, but merely shows how differently he is shaped by the USSR. Wonderfully thought out. Any fan of comics or alternate history need to read this book.
This book made me love Lex Luthor. I don't think that was its primary intent, as it is supposed to be a re-imagining of Superman as if he landed in Russia and became a poster child for Joseph Stalin, but Luthor is such a ridiculous character that I found more drawn to what he meant as a definition of America, as opposed to whatever values Superman picked up working on a Soviet farm.
The reason for this rests on Mark Millar's shoulders. An excellent author on Marvel's Ultimate run--and Marvel Knights' Spiderman, I beleive--his voice for Superman is vague, not capturing the fact that his country boy values remain the same in any situation, it's how they're used that matters.
Luthor, however, is vibrant, maniacal, obsessive, a workhorse, and believably, the President of the United States of America. He represents the best and worst of the working American, while Lois fades into the background as a dutiful wife and Superman's paranoia remains stereotypical and unspecific.
Great artwork, though. Very propoganda poster and Fleischer-like.

I probably would have enjoyed it more if there had been fewer moments where the characters said something to the effect of, "Wait, wait, let me spend the next few panels and giant speech bubbles explaining all the ways in which I am awesome." That said, the version of Batman who shows up in this book is pretty awesome.
4. Great premise. Fun beats. Immersive coloring. Mind-blowing ending. Could have done SO much more with theme and idea exploration though.

One of the Best Superman stories ever
Imaginative, much more than a simple what if type of story. Best of the “else world” stories that I’ve read.

Well, that was an interesting 'what if' scenario with an interesting twist towards the end that I had to re-read the last few pages to get it to sink in. Superman still wants to help people, that's at his core, but its been twisted to fit Russia's ideas. Its fascinating to see how the others also fit in this version now. Batman, Wonder Woman, Lex Luthor, Lois; all these people, and more, have interesting lives when comparing it to main stream cannon. Its a good thought experiment, and definitely a beautiful book too.
