Back when I read this the first time in August 2006 I wrote this as my review:

"This alternative take on the Superman myth really makes it something special. Well worth a read even if you aren't a Superman fan"

Well, that was a library book (one of the very few times I've used a library) and when back in the UK at the end of last year I found the deluxe hardcover running very cheap in a favourite old comic shop of mine (actually saying that they moved and set up a new shop in Canterbury but it's still the same place at it's heart) I picked it up.

Indeed what I first said stands true - this really is an enjoyable alternate tale. I've never really been a big Superman fan so the non-canon stories work so much better for me. I've got enough DC universe awareness to have a passing knowledge of who the other players are but it's not necessary and the themes run along quite nicely without needing to wade through 60 odd years of backstory. It's an intriguiong concept and Millar makes a big deal of it. The art throughout is striking especially the redesigns of some famous characters. Plus he portrays Lex in a way that gives a more detailed and empathic look at his motivations and relationship to Supes.

It's a good read. The deluxe edition isn't that special, containing a munch of sketches from the principal artists and not much else. Still, the pages are bigger and if you can pick it up cheap it's worth the admission.

So good! And then it got even better! I am not a big Superman fan, perhaps that is why I prefer a comic where he is being proven wrong. Definitely challenged many of the conventional notions of Superman and the American way while at the same time being entertaining.

Very cool liked the ending

This was in 3 parts, the first one was brilliant, the other 2 were pretty boring.

You can't both sides communism v capitalism, I think the ending literally made me lose brain cells.

This was a very interesting and intriguing twist of a well known superhero. I loved it, couldn't put it down.
adventurous dark tense fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: Complicated
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

Neat concept. Mediocre art. Fine execution. Cheap resolution. A lot of the exploration of the concept is just comic book pulp.

This was excellent and tons of fun. All the characters were spot on, the art was great, the story was pure genius. Definitely recommended reading for anyone into DC comics.
