I hated this book. It was essentially a modge podge of every popular ya fantasy but they cussed and there were explicit scenes.

I really wanted to dislike this book. Rebecca Yarros has made some… questionable choices in her writing and her public presence, but when a coworker lent me the book I figured I might as well see if the hype was worth it. And yeah, her writing can be lazy and the romance made my skin crawl at times, but DAMN. This book pulled me IN. It really reminded me of the fantasy I loved so much in middle school but written for me as a 20-something. I mean, the Divergent parallels are so strong. But there are things that I think Yarros did well. I loved how she included a disabled main character and didn’t have magic just, cure her (bonus points for including a Deaf/Hard of Hearing character!). There is queer representation (albeit mostly in background characters) without being weird. And as I reached the latter part of the book I felt that the story became more unique. I’ll be diving into the second installment with relish, but I’ve still got my eye on you, Rebecca.

I really enjoyed this, but I do think the pacing ended up being a bit off in the last 20%, hence the dropped .5 star.

Violet makes an interesting character, and her particular disability makes for a very interesting premise in a world where strength very much depends on the cooperation of their body.

The intrigue over all was well done, although I do feel like maybe the book was a touch too long. Looking forward to the next one.

Also, if Dain doesn't lose his hands in a future book as punishment for what an utter bastard he is, then I'll never forgive the author.
He's on par with a rapist and has no place to live.
