Dr. Becky Kennedy’s guide to parenting is surprisingly simple and straightforward, and that’s part of the beauty of this book. At the same time, some of the advice she provides feels pretty simplistic, especially if you’re dealing with older kids who have behavioral problems. I enjoyed the first part of the book a lot more than the second half, mostly because Dr. Becky taps into the “why” behind behaviors, which is what I really wanted to know more about. She also provides parents with a lot of grace, moving beyond the “good parent” / “bad parent” binary. We’re all just doing the best we can, and having someone acknowledge that in any form is something of a relief.

I think this is the best parenting book I’ve ever read. I’ve already applied some of its strategies with my kid, and I can tell he feels more understood.
While this is technically a parenting book, I think it can also be helpful for anyone who grew up in a place or hearing the message that there was something wrong with them or that they were bad inside (*cough* the church *cough*). I better understand some things that I did or felt as a child and now know that I was a good kid having a hard time.

This book made me re-think a lot of how I approach the toughest parts of parenting. As I was reading it, so much of it made so much sense to me. It felt right in my gut, and I’ve started to incorporate a lot of the strategies and ideas she discussed. I think it’s helped, especially the idea of focusing on connection over control. It feels much better and I think has made me a better parent and helped my son trust me a lot more. I don’t follow everything to a tee, but I’m not sure that’s really the idea of parenting books. I like taking the things that make sense in my gut and leaving the things that don’t really seem to work for us.
