"The arrogance of English is that the only way to be animate, to be worthy of respect and moral concern, is to be human."

This book was really, really beautiful. It was also really, really long. At some points, I appreciated it. Hearing Kimmerer speak at such length about the things that she is (and we should be) passionate about is inspiring and motivating. I felt like I learned so much from this book, and it reinforced other ideas that I've been living with. It taught me about plants, animals, and the ecosystem, filling my mind with lovely little facts I never knew would fascinate me. At other points, I felt the length eroding me away. It took me a month to read this, which is very slow for me. I wanted to learn more about giving thanks, reciprocity, and hope. But spending an hour trudging through descriptions of algae and fungus had me just hoping she would get to the point, no matter how beautiful the language was (but the end point was quite nice).
I loved the overall message of this book. I loved the compassion written here, and the prose-poetry that Kimmerer wrote with. Some of the images she painted will stick with me for a long time. I think that I'm going to give it some time and then read it again.

Wonderful prose and insightful commentary on our relationship with the natural world.

I think this should have ended a few chapters earlier, instead of being spoon fed the takeaways.
