I absolutely loved this book—it was such a delightful surprise. I connected with the protagonist, Laurie, as she faces the prospect of turning 40 and makes the bold decision not to settle. Her refusal to conform to what others expect of her, and her acceptance of both what she wants and doesn’t want in life, felt empowering and relatable. While my life and desires don’t completely mirror Laurie’s, I couldn’t help but notice some parallels. That sense of recognition was comforting.
I also adored Dot. The journey of going through Dot’s estate after her passing was not only at times humorous and but also a catalyst for Laurie’s self-discovery. And of course, the mystery of the wooden decoy duck was a delight—such a cute and fun element that added charm to the story.
