This was a delightful mystery/romance combo. I appreciated the exploration of meaningful ways to live a life. Was the mystery/caper entirely realistic? No, but I was so charmed by the duck.
Dot nodded. “Well, let’s paint it goldfish, then.”
Laurie’s eyes opened wider. “Really?”
“Sure. Why not?”
“Just like that?”
“Why are you scandalized, love. It’s just paint.”
“The default is forgetting, not remembering, isn’t it? You’ve forgotten more about your own life than you remember. I have, too.”

“I heard you saw Nick.”
“For heaven’s sake, where did you hear that? Who is talking about this?”
“I heard it from Mom, and I think Scott had a text from one of Nick’s cousins.”
“There are way too many people in this town for a town with so few people in it.” 😂

I appreciated that this book didn't follow many common rom-com tropes (though it had a few). However, it took about 100/300 pages in for the pace to pick up to reasonable.
I hated everything about this. I can’t believe I finished it.
Wow: this one felt flat. My first response was "INANE"--it seems that Holmes tried to do something symbolic with ducks (maybe to set up the FLYING SOLO title/theme?) and . . . pretty much failed. I texted my sister when the duck heist happened, hoping the story would gain some depth/energy/interest. . . . but alas, such was not the case. The writing seems distracted: it's linked to Maine, but there's absolutely nothing inherently Maine-related in the story (someone remarks that they can see lobsters whenever they want to . . .????), the characters just seem flat, and the theme of deciding on one's life path is laboriously developed and I didn't much care by the end.
I enjoyed Evvie Drake Starts Over, but this one. . . MEH!

I really enjoyed this book! When I tried to decide which book to read from the library, I had three in my hand, and discussed it with the librarian. She said that Flying Solo was the title that she had really heard the most about.
I was so glad I went with this one. It was just a really good plot and I loved the small town setting.

I really love Linda Holmes’s dialogue, character development, and Maine nostalgia. This book was another great one.

I really appreciated how many times this one made me chuckle aloud. June, Laurie, and Nick are all very funny in a way that felt very familiar to me, and familial. The way family and lifelong friends can just get each other.
