I really liked this one.
This is a silly, inconsequential—one might almost say *cozy*—book that is largely about the retrieval of a wooden duck, and I liked it very much... I liked Laurie and this was a great way to start 2023 ♡

This was fine. I think this is a book you should read in 2-3 days and it would be a nice lovely read, but because I just happened to really draw this one out, I found I wasn't as into it. In general the story didn't grab me and I didn't find the conclusions all that satisfying.
I was sad they didn’t end up living together at the end.
Flying Solo had been on my list for a while and I was happy to pick it up from the library last week. I really enjoyed Evie Drake Starts Over and I hoped this would live up to my expectations. It did. It’s a nice easy read, enough intrigue to the story to keep me going, and likeable characters. I anticipated the expected ending, and I’ll give no spoilers, but I was pleasantly surprised with the ending. I hope Holmes has another new book soon!
Linda Holmes is now an auto-buy author for me. I loved Evvie Drake so much and was so excited for this one. It did not disappoint. As someone who just turned 40, I appreciated that Laurie was approaching her 40th birthday. This book really dealt with some deep topics and it was super thoughtful and explored a new side that we don't always see. Throw a caper and an adorable librarian into the mix and it's a winner!
I was provided an advanced copy of this book by the publisher which did not affect my review.

Another delightful book by Linda Holmes. I found the characters in this easy to relate to and loved following their journeys. I rarely highlight passages from novels, but there were moments here (and in Evvie Drake) that prompted me to do so.
I rarely give 5 stars, and I almost never give 5 stars to a book that is designed to be a very good Gen X/Millennial rom com. But this book is deceptive: it feels breezy until it’s not. It asks plenty of the reader. Just when it all makes sense, not so much. Just when we commit to our own narrative, we are caused to wonder. This one was better than Evvie Drake.
3.8 stars
A story with a good heart and a low-stakes mystery, and an old flame rekindled. Holmes valiantly attempts to make the case for Laurie not being selfish or rigid in her thinking and she just about pulls it off.

Linda Holmes and Abbi Waxman are my favorite contemporary authors for relatable reads.
I love the characters in Flying Solo (and also in Evvie Drake Starts Over, her previous book) because they feel like friends.
